Ancient villages

Marcaglione - Panoramic view (by D. Achille)
Marcaglione - Panoramic view (by D. Achille)

Dipped into a luxurious and uncontaminated nature, the little towns and villages placed all around Valli Cupe are rich in history and culture:

Sersale is important because of its ancient hand-crafted traditions and its artistic exhibitions; Zagarise is known for its Gothic church, its Norman tower and some paintings hosted into one of its churches, whose Italian name is Chiesa del Rosario; Cerva owns some little aristocratic palaces, two interesting museums (the Chestnut Museum and the Ceramics Museum) and is characterized by beautiful mural paintings all along its main road. These ones and many other towns populate today the area surrounding Valli Cupe.

But here you can even find something more: nearby Sersale and the other towns there are in fact a lot of ruins proving the existence in the past of ancient villages, castles and monasteries which are very interesting from an historical, cultural and mythological point of view. Among them we can remember the village known as Marcaglione, a monastery called Santi Tre Fanciulli and above all Barbaro, whose existence has something of legendary.

It seems in fact that the Arabians had conquered this ancient town, born and disappeared in mysterious circumstances, and that Charlemagne had sent Roland and many other brave paladins of his own in order to free it up. But a terrible witch cast a spell against them and they all died except for Roland, who bravely managed to relieve the town from Arabian invaders.
