| Campanaro Waterfall – Front view |
A lush subtropical vegetation surrounds about a hundred of waterfalls, whose height can even reach 100 metres. Here you can live an incredible experience by bathing into the clear and uncontaminated rivers and streams coming down from the mountains impetuously and flowing as far as the Ionian Sea.
Although it is situated in one of the most unspoiled sites of this area, the Campanaro Waterfall (Cascata Campanaro) is easily accessible and represents a beautiful example of what the visitors can find here. On the way leading up to the waterfall you can see three fountainheads, a characteristic little running water pool called vullu and an ancient bridge built by local craftsmen but partly destroyed during the Second World War. It is perfectly integrated with the natural environment of this site and proves that a way to safeguard nature in spite of the human presence all around it really exists.
The wild and uncontaminated environment surrounding this waterfall (22 metres high) gives the visitors the impression to be into a kind of little but marvellous paradise. The particular colour of the rocks over which the clear waters flow gives the waterfall a magical appearance and the presence of rare species of plants makes it look like an equatorial wood. Moreover, this site is important because it is related to the local history: it was just here in fact that five frightful bandits were arrested.
Not far from the Campanaro Waterfall we can find another beautiful natural site where the Rupe Waterfall (Cascata Rupe) can be admired. Very important from the geological and naturalistic point of view, it flows upon granitic rocks and just at his feet usually grow up two rare kinds of tropical fern, the Cheilanthes marantae and the Cretan brake. Crocchio’s gullies are instead situated along the mountain stretch of the ancient river known as Arocha. Here also rare and high-valued species of plants grow up, such as the Royal fern and many other ones.
